This won t absolutely silence your keyboard calling the o rings silencers is a misnomer but it will reduce the sound of a loud mechanical keyboard down to a similar volume as a much quieter rubber dome keyboard. Dome switch keyboards are a hybrid of flat panel membrane and mechanical switch keyboards. Rubber dome keyboards are a specific modification of a standard membrane keyboard. While they use rubber domes scissor switch keyboards attach the keys to the keyboard through two plastic pieces that interlock much like scissors do.

Dampeners stop the keycaps from slamming into the switch surface seen here. Its simple structure and low cost makes it an ideal solution for budget keyboards. They bring two circuit board traces together under a rubber or silicone keypad using either metal dome switches or polyurethane formed domes. The membrane rubber dome switch is the most common type of keyboard switches.

The metal dome switches are formed pieces of stainless steel that when compressed give the user a crisp positive tactile feedback.
